So we know Pokémon Go has hit the world by storm this month with businesses all over the world cashing in, but what does it mean for the event management industry? Is it just ANOTHER fad that gives kids (and adults!) another excuse to be glued to their phones?
On one hand the game has helped develop a sense of community among the players and even encourages people to be more active (there are Pokémon Trekking hikes organised in the US) while, on the other hand, you have to constantly dodge players on the sidewalk, or even watch out for them while driving! In Sydney a small get together turned in to a 2,000 player event!
Whichever way you see it, the app has already generated $35 million in revenue and hasn’t even been released in some of the key markets for mobile gaming so again, how can we, as event managers, get a piece of this multimillion-dollar pie?
Well the Mantra Group has been quick to launch one of the first Pokémon Go-friendly hotels in Sydney and Melbourne by encouraging fans to ‘Pokéstop By Our Bar’, while Dreamworld on the Gold Coast are hosting exclusive after dark Pokémon Go Night Walks.
At the end of the day, only time will tell how long the Pokémon Goers will be around for and, whether you love them or hate them, incorporating a few Pokémon Lure’s in to your next event will be a sure way to get guests talking and show that you and your business have a sense of humour!
